Introduction: The Benefits of Satellite Earth Observation for International Development Assistance
Welcome to the Space for International Development Assistance short 'MOOC'.
This set of learning resources is presented in the form of a light-touch 'MOOC' (Massive Open Online Course), but it can be used in any way that best suits your interests. You can either follow sequentially or jump right to the topics that are most relevent to you.
The 'MOOC' provides an introduction to the benefits of satellite Earth Observation for international development assistance (IDA). It demonstrates the utility of satellite-enabled solutions for sustainable development, particularly in environmentally sensitive areas and in regions at risk of disasters or the impact of conflict, by showcasing real-world examples.
International development assistance and sustainable development agencies and NGOs are increasingly seeing satellite Earth Observation (EO) as a powerful tool for addressing a wide range of sustainable development goals (SDGs) and broader international development assistance ambitions.
Satellite EO provides a wide range of different types of environmental information that are global, comprehensive, accurate, repeatable and timely, and that are key to the effective planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of development assistance activities.
This MOOC features contributions and perspectives from leading voices in development from the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and European Space Agency. It shows examples of data, applications and new capabilities under the Space for IDA cooperation agreement and stemming from the previous EO4SD partnership, between the European Space Agency, World Bank and Asian Development bank, as well as related initiatives.
It includes videos, supplemental text, information and links to other relevant learning resources, support services, and tools to assist in understanding and implementing the Space for IDA cooperation agreement. There are also four quizzes at the end of each Chapter (and in the middle of Chapter 2) to help you consolidate your learning, these are informal and there is no formal scoring. Participation certificates are available for this MOOC, you can request one using the form at the end of the course.
For additional context you will find a list of links to associated initiatives, reports and general reading at the end of Chapter 1.
